Diabetes Rash

diabetes rashDiabetes rash is an early symptom of diabetes that can be noticed before a person is even diagnosed for diabetes. It is like a warning signal for diabetes. Skin rashes which occur in diabetes are also called as diabetic dermadromes. About 33% of the people affected with diabetes may have a chance of being affected with skin disorder or diabetes rash at one point or other. Patients suffering from diabetes rash may have itching on the surface of the skin and/or discoloration of the skin. The skin may appear in red color as was affected by some kind of allergy.


Diabetes rash may occur due to the following reasons:

  • Infection caused due to fungus
  • Infection caused due to bacteria
  • Reaction due to allergy
  • Disseminated Granuloma Annulare
  • Thickening of the arteries
  • Necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum (NLD)

Most of the diabetes rash fungal infections are caused due to Candida albicans. It is yeast-like fungus that can be source for itchy rashes of moist, red areas surrounded by tiny blisters and scales.

Although many kinds of bacteria are responsible for diabetes rash, staphylococcus bacteria also called staph is the common one which is found in most of the patients suffering with this kind of rash.In some cases, insulin taken in injection form or pills may become allergic to the skin. This kind of allergic reaction will reflect in the form of rash or bumps.

Another peculiar type of rash which appears in ring form on the skin is caused by Disseminated Granuloma Annulare. Besides being formed in other parts of the body, ears and fingers are commonly affected areas.

Thickening of the arteries may lead to rash on the legs. This can be referred as diabetes leg rash. The affected skin changes the color, appears shining due to narrowed blood vessels.

Necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum (NLD) relates to the changes in the blood vessels.


  • Symptoms due to fungal infection

Fungal infection may appear at the skin webbing of fingers and toes, beneath the breasts and armpits, groins (warm and moist folds of the skin), mouth corners and under the foreskin in uncircumcised men.

  • Symptoms due to Bacterial infection

Symptoms include boils, stypes (infections of the glands of the eyelid), infection around the nails, infection of the hair follicles (Folliculitis) and deep infection on the tissue beneath the skin.

  • Symptoms due to being allergic to insulin or pills
  1. Rash on the skin
  2. Bump on the skin
  • Symptoms due to disseminated Granuloma annulare
  1. Rash on Ears
  2. Rash on Fingers
  • Symptoms due to thickening of arteries

These symptoms are more pronounced in younger generation compared to old people. Due to this leg rash they cannot do physical exercise also as the blood supply in the affected parts is reduced. Affected legs heal slowly because the blood carries the white cells to fight the infection.

  • Symptoms due to Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum (NLD)

Appears as few spots on the body but the size is large and deep into the body. The affected skin raises up, becomes dull and turns into red color.


Most of the skin disorders can be treated or prevented if they are detected at an early stage. This rash could help the person to prevent diabetes from setting in the body as this indication happens to be a pre-cursor to prevent major destruction of the body in diabetes patients.

When diabetes rash symptoms are pronounced in the body, patient should consult the doctor immediately. Regular exercise and medication under expert doctor guidance will help control the sugar level in the body and leads to happy and normal life.
